Embark on a profound historical odyssey at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, nestled amidst Houston's towering skyscrapers. This hallowed ground, established in January of 1866, just two years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and six months following the liberation of Texas slaves, stands as a beacon of the unyielding spirit and faith of those once bound by enslavement.

Antioch's immersive experience weaves a narrative of service, dedication, and community that has profoundly impacted men, women, and children across Houston. As you traverse the church grounds, you become part of a story that celebrates the determination of a people who fiercely held onto the land their ancestors secured with newfound freedom.

Duration: 90-minutes. A minimum of 6 people required for the tour to take place. If this minimum is not met, the tour may be cancelled.

Antioch Missionary Baptist Church

Antioch was founded in January, 1866, just months after the end of the Civil War. The organizers were John Wheeler, Henry Styles, Edward Smith, Preston Greenhill, Daniel Riley, T. L. Brown, Sandy Parker, Wash Rhodes, Isaac Williams, Rhyna Moore, Margaret Jones and Cynthia Hill. These individuals were assisted by missionaries from the First Baptist Church and the German Baptist Church: Reverend W. C. Crane and Reverend J. B. Link. Seven months later, Reverend Israel Sydney Campbell, a black minister and missionary, led the church to erect a “brush arbor” on the edge of Buffalo Bayou.
